Started in 1976 by professor Muhammad Yunus with a mere $27.00 from his own pocket, Grameen Bank today serves more than 6 million poor families with loans, savings, insurance and other services. This bank is fully owned by its clients and has been a model for microfinance institutions around the world.
Dr. Yunus is now beginning a new mission: Grameen America, the first Grameen Bank style microcredit program in the U.S. Grameen America will focus on savings and credit establishment and providing loans and savings programs to foster entrepreneurship among the poor throughout the U.S.…extending a path toward prosperity for those who have the will to attain it regardless of their starting point. Join us as Professor Yunus reflects on his extraordinary career, the experiences of Grameen Bank, and the replications it has spawned over the years.
Dr. Yunus' lecture is being underwritten by UCSD Extensions' Helen Edison Lecture Series, IRPS at UCSD, the Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies at USD, and SDSU.
